Nothing to Fear

President Franklin Roosevelt said, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.

The Bible makes alot of promises that I like. Things like…

  • there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ
  • if we confess our sins… He will forgive us
  • ask and it will be given to you… seek and you will find
  • when you go through deep waters I will be with you

Then there are a few that I’m sure I am supposed to feel good about but they are not quite as quickly comforting as the rest. I am particularly thinking of one that surrounds my family’s current context. It is found in a second letter written by a guy named Timothy and it says that… “for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and selfcontrol.” Most days I believe this. Then there are other days when I encounter difficult truths like the one I hit yesterday as I was spending some quiet time with God.

I was reminded of the text where Jesus was giving the sermon He would be most remembered for… the Sermon on the Mount of Olives. In particular I was touched by these words… “Give us this day our daily bread.” There is an inferred promise there that in fact He will give us what we need for each day. But that promise is not nearly as safe as the ones I mentioned earlier. I would love to have weekly bread or even monthly or yearly. But daily bread… that takes much more faith than I have.

In fact it scares me to death to think that my provision may only show up on a daily basis. But if that promise is true… I have nothing to fear.
