Genesis 24-26

There are a few sayings that bear mentioning here… “like father, like son” and “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” are the first two that come to mind. We are definitely seeing some very obvious patterns here. What started with Abraham is now coming to roost in Isaac.

There is a pretty sweet love story in chapter 24 that gets quickly out-shadowed by the impetuousness of Isaac. If Hollywood refers to certain significant feats as being of biblical proportion, I suppose to be fair, in this case we should say the story in 24 is one of Hollywood proportion.

May these questions help us think through our own propensities…

1. Why the specific command of Abraham regarding which woman was the right one?
2. What was the servant’s default mode when he got to the well? And how did it work?
3. Why do you think it is safe to call the details of this story… a miracle?
4. What are the immediate & obvious differences between Jacob & Esau?
5. What is the significance of Esau’s action in the last few verses of chapter 25?
6. Chapter 26 sounds familiar… again. Why do we tend to pick up (& pass on) negative traits?
7. What are some practical ways that you have observed to break this cycle of repetition?
