This week we’re looking at the Psalm with arguably the most beautiful language of all of them… Psalm 139.
Let’s just get it out of the way… yes, I did borrow the title from James Cameron’s film Avatar. Near the end of the movie one of the main characters who is both human and avatar faces certain mortal peril. He whispers the words, “I see you” to his avatar love interest to let her know that though he is presently in his human state, he can see her as she is for all she really is. It is in a similar way- yet multiplied a thousand times over – that God whispers these words to us in this Psalm. He wants us to know that He sees us as we are for all we really are.
Ponder these questions as you consider the reality of an all-knowing, ever-present, all-powerful God.
1. First impression: how does the fact that God knows everything about you strike you? Why?
2. Does the reality that God knows every step you take bring you ultimate comfort? Why?
3. How do you mentally handle this claim of God’s omniscience? How can He know everything about all things?
4. In what way do verses 7-12 seem to logically follow the content of verses 1-6?
5. What frightens you about the reality of God’s everywhere-presentness?
6. What comforts you about the reality of God’s everywhere-presentness?
7. Do you agree with David’s take on God’s involvement in the creation of man? Why or why not?
8. Why do you think that modern culture pushes us away from this Psalm’s view of God’s involvement?
9. The language of verses 19-22 are difficult to hear. According to these verses… define hatred.
10. Why was David advocating the application of hatred in this context?
11. In what way(s) is his application tied to the first 18 verses of this Psalm?
12. David ends with a most personal application… search me, God. What do you take away from this Psalm?
